“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” is about a transgender woman, Hedwig, originally from East Berlin, fighting against engrained gender and political norms. Her first lover offered her an escape from communist Germany to America in exchange for a sex change, but the surgery was botched, leaving Hedwig with an “angry inch.” Years after the surgery, Hedwig puts conditions on her new lover, Yitzhak, but eventually begins to see the error in her ways. As she allows Yitzhak more freedom, she begins to find her own freedom to love and inches closer to wholeness.
